Through Individual Guidance

For more than fifty years, CJMIB has been helping children and adults with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities build meaningful, independent and fulfilling lives. Based in Antwerp, the organisation provides personalised day programmes, residential support and educational opportunities for people with a moderate to severe intellectual disability.

At the heart of its work lies a simple belief: every person deserves the opportunity to develop their talents, participate in society and be valued for who they are.

A Vision That Changed Lives

CJMIB was founded by former special education teacher Vera Verschaeren, who believed that young people with intellectual disabilities were capable of far more than society expected. In 1972, she started a small life school in her own home, centred around the philosophy of learning to live rather than simply being cared for. Three years later, the initiative officially became CJMIB.

Over the decades, the organisation has grown into a unique network of day centres, supported housing projects and community initiatives across Antwerp, while remaining true to its original vision: offering every individual the warmth, respect, structure and personal guidance needed to flourish.

Today, that vision continues into a new generation. Vera's son Romeo has joined the organisation and is committed to carrying forward the values and mission his mother established more than five decades ago, ensuring that CJMIB remains a place where every individual is given the opportunity to grow, belong and thrive.

Why WAVE Supports CJMIB

At WAVE, we believe everyone deserves a place where they feel at home. Sometimes that means creating inspiring spaces where people can live, work and connect. Other times, it means giving people the personal space, trust and encouragement they need to grow at their own pace.

Our support combines financial contributions with active involvement. Every year, we are enthusiastic supporters of CJMIB's annual theatre production, purchasing tickets and helping fill the audience for one of Antwerp's most inspiring performances. The production is far more than a fundraising event—it is a celebration of creativity, confidence and the remarkable talents of the people CJMIB supports.

Recently, CJMIB also purchased one of our buildings on Sint-Paulusstraat in Antwerp, giving the organisation the space to further expand its activities.

How You Can Support CJMIB

Like many care organisations, CJMIB receives government funding for part of its daily operations, but investments in infrastructure, housing projects and facilities rely heavily on donations and community support.

You can make a difference by making a financial donation, attending the annual theatre production, visiting one of CJMIB's social initiatives such as its Bodega, volunteering your time or simply helping to spread the word. Every contribution helps create new opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to live with greater independence, confidence and dignity.
