Founded by Jean-Jacques Westerlund, the Maritime Heritage Foundation (MPM) is an independent, privately funded organisation dedicated to preserving historic vessels that would otherwise be lost to neglect or demolition.
Driven by a team of passionate volunteers, MPM safeguards maritime heritage not only for its historical significance, but also for the stories, craftsmanship and identity these vessels represent.
By restoring and reimagining these icons within cultural and social initiatives, the foundation ensures that maritime heritage remains relevant and accessible for generations to come.
Why MPM?
This benefit evening is held in memory of Jean-Jacques Westerlund, founder of the Maritime Heritage Foundation (MPM).
His vision was to safeguard Antwerp's maritime heritage and ensure that historic vessels would continue to tell their stories for generations to come. Supporting MPM was more than preserving ships; it was preserving a living part of the city's identity.
This benefit, organised by his daughter Stephanie Westerlund, helps ensure that his vision lives on. Every contribution directly supports the volunteers and restoration projects that protect Antwerp's maritime legacy for future generations.

Where is MPM based?
The Maritime Heritage Foundation (MPM) is based at Antwerp's historic Dry Docks, a remarkable waterfront site where the city's rich maritime history continues to shape its future.
Surrounded by the River Scheldt, the Royers Lock and the Kattendijk Dock, this 11-hectare heritage site is home to nine historic dry docks, former workshops and industrial buildings that once played a vital role in one of Europe's greatest ports.
Today, the Dry Docks are entering an exciting new chapter. Guided by an ambitious masterplan, the site is being transformed into a vibrant destination where maritime heritage, craftsmanship and public life come together. Historic structures are carefully restored, authentic industrial character is preserved, and new public spaces invite visitors to reconnect with Antwerp's unique relationship with the water.
As the redevelopment unfolds over the coming years, the Dry Docks will become a place where history is not simply preserved, but experienced, ensuring that Antwerp's maritime legacy continues to inspire future generations.
